Welcome back to Cairns High for 2014

Welcome back to school for 2014 and a special welcome to all our new students and their families. I trust you had a happy festive season and are refreshed ready for Term 1.

2014 will be another substantial year with positive progress, inevitable obstacles to overcome and plenty of achievable opportunities to undertake.

This year will also see welcomed changes to the way in which we communicate with our parents and the wider school community. Please ensure your contact details are up to date with This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   as Cairns High will communicate via a more modern and electronically interactive platform. We also welcome you to follow this link to subscribe to our new eNewsletter

For parents that were unable to attend the information evenings for 2015 intake the Expression of Interest packages will be available from the main office from Friday 7 March. These forms need to be returned to the school's main office by Thursday 27 March.

Grafton Street has been changed to a one-way North bound street between Upward and Gatton Streets. The parking, lanes and signage have also been changed. Students have been provided with a fenced safety area between the new BUS ONLY lane and car Drop (or collect) & Go Zone. If parents drive children to or from school they will need to observe these new traffic conditions.

Parents are requested to adhere to the following Do’s and Don’ts to maximise safety for students and other people in the school community utilising this area.

Do’s

Don’ts

Only use the Drop and Go Zone

Don’t enter the BUS ONLY lane even if it is empty

Only drop off and collect from the Drop and Go Zone

Don’t stop or drop/collect from the roadway. This is very unsafe and is illegal.

Drive as far north as possible along the Drop and Go Zone before dropping off/collecting to allow for maximum number of cars to enter the zone.

Don’t park at the start of the Drop and Go Zone. This prevents others from entering the zone.

After 3.00pm move on if your child is not loading or in sight

Don’t park in the Drop & Go Zone for more than 2 or 3 minutes

Please also note the Sunbus bus stop has been moved a block towards the Esplanade, opposite Flecker House.

There are more major works planned for this year including the construction and installation of an electronic sign board and a full upgrade of the Canteen facilities in anticipation of the year 7 influx in 2015.

Cairns State High School’s priorities for 2014 include:

  • Enhancing school wide use of data
  • Implementing ‘the Art and Science of Teaching’
  • Quality assurance through International Accreditation
  • Acknowledgement of whole school pathways in preparation for year 7

Some major works in the school progressed over the holidays and the Year 7 Facility has commenced construction, due for completion at the end of the year.

Look out for evidence this year of the implementation of an innovative Communication Strategy. This will commence with the rollover to a new website structure as well as the change in our newsletter distribution method. Cairns High has teamed up with Schoolzine and will create 10 eNewsletters per year on top of our Friday weekly parent updates. Look out for an email with a link to the first eNewsletter towards the end of February.

All of these wonderful new resources for Cairns High students and their families come at a cost. I encourage you to be involved with our fantastic and dedicated P&C Association who continue to assist with these major projects. To find out more and access the Voluntary Contribution Form please visit the P&C webpage on the Cairns High website.
