Be Brave and Shave at Cairns High

Orian Blackmur with Senior Leaders post shave on 11 March 2016
Today 34 Australians will be diagnosed with blood cancer and they will need help from the Leukaemia Foundation. The money that Cairns High students raise goes towards research to find cures and kinder treatments, and free emotional and practical support for local families. Our community is regional so this includes transport and accommodation in a home-away-from-home near the hospital during treatment.

This Friday, eight students and two staff from Cairns High will be brave and shave for a worthy cause; the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave. The students and staff have been shaking their tins at school and in the wider community to raise much needed funds to support people in FNQ with blood cancer.

Ms Antonietta Lavalle and Ms Catherine Hicks, Student Council Coordinators are organising the event and are proud that it is a long, standing tradition for the school. “This year, as in previous years the students are feeling a close connection with fundraising for the cause, knowing that the funds they raised go directly to helping local families who are suffering,” Ms Lavalle commented.

“It’s great to see all year levels getting involved, learning about their region and it’s health services, whilst having fun and getting crazy to make a difference.” To kick off before the main affair Cairns High students will participate in colouring their hair to boost the fundraising efforts of those brave enough to shave. The main event at lunch time in Crosswell Hall, the school’s largest venue will be filled with colour and an array of vibrant entertainment. The School Captains and Senior Leaders with host and chat with the students who will shave! Brave shavers include a father (staff member) and son (student) team, a Business teacher, male senior students and one female senior student.

The Cairns community can assist by heading to the World’s Greatest Shave website and making a donation to the Cairns High team.
