Cairns High Bulldogs regain title

The Cairns High Bulldogs Cheer Squad has competed in the National School Championships and Asia Pacific Grand Internationals 19-22 September for cheerleading and dance. The 50 plus cheerleaders will return home with their multiple medals and trophies later this week.

Teams from all over Australia and the Asia-Pacific region competed in these highly anticipated and exciting events. The ultimate aspiration for these teams is to be named Grand Champion for cheer or dance, as well as the opportunity to win bids to attend international cheer and dance events.

The Cairns High Bulldog Cheer Squad was named Overall Grand Champions in Dance and Level 3 Cheer Grand Champions for the national event.  These overall titles were the culmination of wins, places and being awarded the title of National Champions in many of the multiple dance and cheer event categories.

The squad was also deemed Grand Champions for Variety and Contemporary Dance in the international event and has scored a bid to compete at World Cup Cheer and Dance Internationals to be held in Hong Kong next year. The Cairns High Bulldog Cheer Squad will also be bringing home the Team Spirit Award for Internationals.

The culmination of over 200 solid hours of tumbling, stunting, acrobatics and dancing was realised in Brisbane. The event required 187 costumes and 146 props. The school would like to acknowledge the talented and dedicated head coach Hannah Bliss, assisting teacher Steven Jones and continuing support from parents.

“Over four days and two competitions the squad have performed 54 routines. They totally deserve their multiple Grand Champion wins as well as the over 15 Highly Commended awards. I am incredibly proud of everything these students have achieved. The results are beyond my wildest expectations. Throughout this year the students and I have followed the motto: Eat. Sleep. Cheer. Repeat,” commented Ms Bliss.

Fundraising events were held in the lead up to this event. Countless raffle ticket sales and performing at local community events have been a focus. The Cairns High Bulldog Cheer Squad’s achievements of Grand Champions 2013 and 2014, as well as being named the FNQ Heat official cheer squad 2014 are all well-deserved accolades for the squad. The local community should also be recognised for its support of the various fundraising events.
