Cairns High announces student's acceptance to the UQ Young Scholars Program

Ayumi Ichikawa, year 11 IB Diploma student

Cairns State High School is delighted to announce that one of our International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) students has been selected to attend the University of Queensland (UQ) Young Scholars Program.

Ayumi Ichikawa commenced the IB Diploma, pre-university course offered at Cairns High at the end of 2013. Ayumi is thrilled to have been selected into the Young Scholars Program (YSP). She will join other talented and like-minded students and engage with the university’s academic community including the team of UQ Student Mentors.

“I am very excited and keen to learn more about UQ as it is where I aspire to be in 2016”, Ayumi commented.

The five day residential camp later this year will be held at the St Lucia Campus of UQ. Ayumi will gain a valuable insight into life at university. The collaborative forums she will be involved in, as well as the range of social, sporting and cultural activities which complement the academic program, will enjoyable and beneficial for Ayumi.

“Finding out more about living in Brisbane, away from Cairns where I was born, and getting involved in all the activities, is what I am looking forward to most of all”, expressed Ayumi.

The YSP camp is designed to nurture and develop exceptional students, like Ayumi, as they complete their senior schooling. It provides a fantastic opportunity for extension and enrichment.

Ms Laura Mazzolini, IB Program Manager, is very happy that one of the IB students has been selected for this fantastic opportunity. “UQ is Ayumi’s first preference for university post-graduation. This experience along with the skills she is acquiring through the IB Diploma will ensure she is very well prepared for her university studies. I wish her the best of luck”, commented Ms Mazzolini.
