Captains a roaring success

Lions Youth of the Year

Recently, our school captains participated in the annual Lions Youth of the Year competition. This prestigious event is now in its 50th year, and is designed to develop leadership skills in young Australians and foster their desire to take an active and constructive role in the community.

At the club level, Cairns High was represented by Pranay Gulati, Mia Walsh, Neil Josen Delos Reyes and Olivia Taifalos. The process involved an interview, application and public speaking presentation. The students had to prepare and present a 5 minute speech for the Cairns Lions Club, as well as respond to two impromptu questions. They engaged their audience with thought-provoking topics such as multiculturalism in the global context, Indigenous Australians in contemporary society, women in STEM and the future of democracy.

All students did a terrific job, and Olivia Taifalos proceeded to the Zone Level. Here she competed against students from other schools in the region, and again presented her speech and impromptu responses to the Lions Clubs members, teachers and parents. Candidates were asked “What makes a great leader?” and “Does the media report the news or create the news?” Although she was not selected for the regional level, Olivia did Cairns High proud. Her responses were clear and well-considered, and overall it was a great experience for her in her final year of school.

Congratulations to all participants.
