Career Pathways Program and continuing the Year 10 journey

Year 10 Work Experience
Congratulations to all Year 10 students who participated in the first whole cohort work experience program at Cairns State High.  Feedback from employers has been extremely positive with many students receiving part time job and School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) opportunities.  If your student has been offered a SBA and I have not made contact please ensure you contact Mr Harland to discuss this exciting opportunity further.

VPG launched the inaugural workplace learning program with Cairns State High School in 2018 culminating in the placement of 256 students into work placement. VPG was excited to work with Cairns SHS in delivering a program strongly focused on the development of transferable employability skills through work place observation, experience and immersion with industry peers.

VPG’s community and industry partners contributed a diverse range of real-world-opportunities and overwhelmingly reported Cairns SHS Students were committed, responsive and enthusiastic on-the-job.  2018 Program implementation has been highly successful and VPG is looking forward to delivering the program in 2019.

Some interesting stats:

  •  256 students partook in the program, 142 females and 113 males.
  • Over 35 industries were sourced for the program and the largest placement industry areas were Retail, Education, Hospitality, Early Education & Tourism.
  • 54% of placements were entry level, core industries. 46% of placements were professional, limited areas.

Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection Information
All Year 10 students have now received information on what subjects are offered in Year 11 and 12 for 2019.  They now complete a subject survey (instructions have been emailed to students).  This information guides what subjects are offered next year so be sure to talk to your student about their choices.
Throughout the remainder of the term, students will engage with resources in their Bridge classes to finalise subject choices.  Refer to table below for key dates.  Be sure to refer to our 2019 Senior Subject Guide for detailed descriptions of all subjects and senior school systems.
