In collaboration with James Cook University and Cairns Regional Council, in the name of sustainability

25/03/2015

Cairns State High School’s Environmental Senior Leader is on a mission for Environmental Sustainability. With the support of both James Cook University (JCU) and Cairns Regional Council the school will host the Cairns High Environmental Awareness Day on Tuesday 26 May 2015.

Ayumi Ichikawa, Environmental Senior Leader at Cairns High has been working closely with TropFutures, an initiative of JCU. TropFutures aims to build mutually beneficial partnerships with schools and strives to create sustainability initiatives within the community. Ayumi is currently studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma through which she has developed her awareness of global issues.

Mentors from the TropFutures program have been meeting with Ayumi and Cairns High’s Environmental Program Coordinators to establish the Environmental Program at the school and hold the Environmental Awareness Day, as the launch event for North Queensland ECOweek.

The inaugural North Queensland ECOweek (29 May to 7 June 2015), involves all sectors of the community – including councils, community groups, learning institutions, businesses and government agencies – holding their eco-events and activities across the region at the same time. Cairns Regional Council’s annual ECOfiesta will be held on 31 May and the JCU Sustainability Symposium will conclude the week.

“It is great to be given support from council to kick off North Queensland ECOweek with our Cairns High Environmental Awareness Day. We, especially Ayumi, really appreciated the value of the JCU Mentors who are also assisting with this journey,” commented Amanda Gonzo, Cairns High Environmental Coordinator.

Interested local businesses and organisations who wish to be part of the Cairns High Environmental Awareness Day through exhibition space or activities and presentations at Cairns High are encouraged to contact the school’s Environmental Program Coordinator on agonz16@eq.edu.au.
