Laughter really is the best medicine

Year 9 Creative Arts class visited the Children’s Ward of the Cairns Base Hospital on Thursday 10 May.

The students entertained many patients ranging in ages from 15 months to 10 years. The aim of the excursion was for students to perform their Clown Doctor skills through portraying well-known characters such as ‘The Cat in the Hat’, ‘Peter Pan’, and ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’.

The students read stories, played cards, performed clowning tricks and danced to music to the enjoyment of their audience. It was very impressive how the students adapted to the many environments and worked in the moment to adapt their performances to suit the varying patient situations.

A thoroughly rewarding experience and all students enjoyed ‘giving back’ to those in need. . . As Patch Adams would say - laughter really is the best medicine!
