Cairns State High School aims to support every student to achieve success. This includes identifying gifted and talented students and maximising their learning outcomes. We acknowledge that students regardless of their ethnic, cultural, gender or socio-economic backgrounds may be gifted and talented. The gifted population includes students who are underachieving and who have disabilities.
Cairns High aims to provide students with opportunities to develop their own abilities and to meet their potential for outstanding achievement in their chosen field, and to at all times, encourage them to explore other opportunities.
Students who are gifted excel, or are capable of excelling, in one or more areas such as general intelligence, specific academic studies, visual and performing arts, physical ability, creative thinking, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. Cairns High offers students opportunities to access excellence or extension programs in all these areas, as well as offering extension work within the curriculum.
Gifted and Talented students may be identified for, or choose to be involved in, one or more of the many Programs of Excellence. Identified students in years 8, 9 and 10 are also invited to participate in Academic Enrichment and International Baccalaureate Days which are generally held once per term.
If not already enrolled in a Program of Excellence through the enrolment process, students should see the Head of Department responsible for the respective program for more detailed information.
